Dave Thomas personal trainer Dave Thomas Personal Trainer

Neil is a typical Foundry client. He works long hours in a stressful City environment, has a young family and plays sport in his free time.  He came to The Foundry as he wanted to improve his general health, add muscle and lose weight.  Over the course of 4 months, training twice a week, NR has already lost over 10 KG, including a whopping 12% body fat and 4 inches off his waist.  He has also added 3kg of very noticeable  lean mass.

The decision to shave is not at our insistence by the way, but after making gains like this who can begrudge a bit of showing off?!

I didn’t really know what to expect when I came to see Dave Thomas at The Foundry as I had never used a Personal Trainer before, but was spending time and money at the gym and not seeing results. I found the whole assessment of my lifestyle, training and nutrition really interesting and the combination of a plan that covered all three, plus the confidence that what I was doing was right, has been awesome. The first few weeks were very tough – lots of soreness and adjusting to a new diet – but I couldn’t believe how quickly I saw results in body shape and fitness. At my age, I can’t believe I feel strong, leaner and more toned than I ever have and how much I’ve become addicted to the diet and training. The training is varied, intense and you always feel like you’ve gotten the most out of a session. I’m a major fan!

Neil.

Due to time constraints with work, Vern has completed his six months of personal training with Dave Thomas, of once a week training (and plenty of self discipline!). See his great achievements and final statistics below alongside a couple of photos worthy of the Gunday hall of fame:personal trainer city london foundry

A genuine pleasure to train and always eager to learn Vern is a fantastic example of the outstanding results (over 10kg of lean mass and over 2 inches on his sick swans) one can make in strength and muscular development, whether for sport or aesthetic reasons, if you follow a well structured training programme, work hard and eat well consistently for a few months.

I really am indebted to you Dave, but at the same time proud that I’ve stuck so rigidly to the program and healthy diet.

V.S – One satisfied customer

Simply one of the best clients Dave has ever had and a true inspiration. Not only did she lose over 20kg over six months and reduced her body fat from 45% to 25%, she has became one of his strongest, fittest clients.

I can’t describe how phenomenal Belen’s results have been… the photo says it all really as she jumps into her old trousers.

With a busy job in finance, a new arrival on the way (now a healthy 6 month old!) and one of the ‘big’ birthdays rapidly approaching he wanted to make some immediate changes to the way he looked and felt but also to find a way to maintain sustainable progress in the futPersonal Training Spitalfieldsure.

JT lost 5kg in 3 weeks by following particular dietary advice trialling the removal of some foods which appeared problematic to him (which is why we’ve highlighted how much the suprailiac and umbilical measurements of his abdomen dropped; backed up by a 3 inch circumference loss around the waist). He has been training now for 6 months and has continued to make excellent progress but his initial 3 week results are what we wanted to highlight today as an example of what can be achieved quickly and painlessly with a few dietary changes and getting a bit more familiar with the weights room.

Date Age Weight Pectoral Suprailiac Umbilical Body Fat Waist
17/1/2011 39 90.3kg 20mm 42mm 34mm 30% - 3 inches
10/2/2011 39 85.2kg 16mm 34mm 26mm 25.6%

Having trained with other people before I can honestly say you’ve been worth every penny Dave. Your genuine enthusiasm and interest in my success is very motivational and whilst I dread the weekly ass kicking I always leave feeling like a new man. It’s been a fantastic experience. Many thanks.

chantal;

The first time I came to see The Foundry was for an overall assessment. I am a very active person but for a while I had a feeling that something was not right in terms of my posture and diet, which was having a negative impact on my training.  I was put on a strict diet which hasn’t been easy, but the results have been amazing and along the way I also shed a few unwanted kilos.”

“I feel so much better now and my friends and family have all commented on the positive change in me. We have also sorted out various aches and pains in my knees and ribs which were seriously affecting my marathon training;  last week I had the most amazing run of my life so thanks to my personal trainer Dave Thomas I have finally discovered what the fuss about exercise is all about!

Personal Trainer LondonAmy approached Personal Trainer Dave Thomas after attending Power Plate classes for a year with minimal training results (she just simply wasn’t achieving enough progressive overload) with the goal of becoming  stronger and leaner.  So far we have dropped about 6% bodyfat and 5kg (measured via 12 site Biosignature Modulation assessment) since the summer and her strength in the deadlift, incline dumbbell press and chin up has improved over 50%

Amy was also tested on our Versa Climber Challenge after 1 month of training.  This is a 300m sprint (the height of the Eiffel Tower) with a leaderboard for the fastest times.  She originally completed it in 13.30 which is a good time but falls roughly in the middle of the female times.  We have subsequently spent the following 2 months on strength training and improving her body composition but more importantly no aerobic conditioning.

This week we tested Amy again and she completed the challenge in 11.28; knocking 2 minutes off her time, becoming the fastest woman to complete the challenge (by 40 seconds) and the 3rd fastest time of both sexes.

We have worked former England and Ireland International footballing star Olliver Nicholas, after his agent approached us with the goal of helping him improve his strength and body composition for a new professional contract.

Get strong for football          Getting strong for football

Focusing just on training and cleaning up his diet, in the first 3 weeks Ollie has reduced his bodyfat by 3% and increased his lean mass by 2.7kg.

Gain muscleI have been working with Personal Trainer Dave Thomas at The Foundry, London, for the past month in preparation for a move abroad, in the hope of receiving a new professional contract.

The intensive, yet sensible training program has allowed me to quickly and efficiently correct all the minor discrepancies that were initially found by the rehab team in order to be able to move onto my Strength & Conditioning work.

On the Health, Strength, Fitness, Speed & Agility side of things, the trainers have put me through my paces via tough yet enjoyable exercises, challenging me on a physical and mental level, as I will need to be able to perform under highly demanding training schedules. Dave Thomas, through his experience, encouragement and intellectual insight has in just four weeks helped me become, and feel, much stronger and more powerful, which not only show in my physique but also in the statistics with me being able to lift more weight week after week.

A HUGE thanks to The Foundry for all your help and I look forward to working with you in my professional future.

Thanks.

Oliver Nicholas

Paul’s original goal was to run a sub 40min 10km.  The irony is we never hit this goal, despite being on target with a 42 minute practice run, because Paul sprained his ankle playing football…twice! So we decided he’d probably benefit from a bit more functional muscle.

Improve your postureBack MusclesWhilst Paul packed on over 6 kg of lean mass and reduced his body fat by around 5% in 8 weeks with only one private session a week, (although he did do a few workouts himself) the most pleasing aspect for me was seeing the massive improvements in his posture.

We also made some excellent improvements to his physique and fitness.  Paul is 6 foot 7 inches and had never tried any compound lifting before.  Within 6 months he was deadlifting 180kg with a pronated grip and no straps;  that’s a lot of weight to lift that far off the ground.

Paul has said many things about us over the years, most of them actually quite nice, but we thought we’d just offer this short, simple testimonial:

Really fantastic. I’ll always keep training at The Foundry, as they’re flexible and understanding enough to fit a plan around you – rather than whatever crazy fitness trend happens to be doing the rounds at that very moment. With a great atmosphere which blends a perfect balance between friendliness and encouragement, you’d be silly not to try it out!‎

JM approached The Foundry initially for a 3 month periodised personal training programme. His hectic diary meant he could only manage one session with me a week but he also did an additional weekly workout on his own.

JM Front  JM Profile

JM’s main problem was a poor and irregular diet; combined with an extreme ectomorph body shape (he is over 6’4”) he had always been extremely skinny and his posture had suffered dramatically. Ectomorphs have to work hard for every gram of muscle and strength they get so the results and photos are testament to JM’s work ethic.

The pictures speak for themselves however the statistics are below:

Before After
Weight 71kg 89kg
Body Fat 13% 13%
Chest 90cm 100cm
Biceps 26cm 38cm
Thighs 48cm 56cm
Bench Press 6RM 40kg 85kg
Pull Ups 0 10

Due to my unhealthy and unsteady eating habits and a lot of stress at work I had been under-weight for quite some time. Additionally,12+ hour work days sitting at a desk had taken their toll on my posture and I’d expected to have some severe problems with my back in the future. Knowing all this, I realized that I needed to work out on a regular basis in some way, however (i) I couldn’t build up sustainable motivation to go to the gym regularly by myself, (ii) I didn’t have a real sense of urgency to make the time, and (iii) I did not know which exercises I would need to do and how to do them correctly anyways, trying to avoid these ‘personal trainers’ hanging around in the gym as they didn’t seem to really care.

Working with Dave changed all that. We set explicit goals for the coming months and would test them regularly. In addition to our weekly meeting in the studio which would usually consist of more intense and diverse exercises, I regularly went to the gym once a week on my own, working through specific exercise plans that Dave developed according to my needs. He also gave me good guidance on how to support the training with a more balanced diet.

For me it was evident from the moment we started that this form of personalized training shows better results, is more motivating and provides higher return for money than any alternatives. My posture has improved dramatically, I have gained weight while reducing body fat at the same time and I feel much more energetic and fit. While I have achieved my initial set of goals, I will continue to work with Dave focussing on sports specific training to improve my surfing and squash.

This is a good indication of what’s achievable in 10 weeks following a Biosignature Modulation Programme and Nutritional Consult once a week. We recommended a training programme for Mike, which he followed on his own as he was already a dedicated trainer, but his results were almost as impressive as many of our clients whom we train in conjunction with Biosignature programmes so well done Mike! What’s also important to note for the uninitiated is that despite there being a large body fat change and weight loss, there was a minimal difference in lean mass as Mike wanted to retain as much lean mass as possible. (Lean mass means muscle, water and bone). Bare this in mind when charting your body composition and DO NOT trust the scales alone!

body transformationBefore
Weight 83.5kg
Body Fat 18.6%
Lean Mass 68kg

After
Weight 77kg
Body Fat 12.3%
Lean Mass 67.5kg

Ed approached me for a progressive 16 week pre season rugby programme a couple of years ago. We had two personal training sessions a week and focussed on sprint sessions and strength work in the gym. We phased this into two periods, Initially we focussed on hypertrophy and body composition and then for the last six weeks we worked on relative strength and power.

Ed was a driven client and it was easy to establish clear SMART goals with him. As a man with a pig farm in the family we didn’t need to worry too much about him hitting his protein and fat goals (he once ate 8 sausages after a training session). Therefore our greatest achievement was to encourage Ed to eat smaller meals more often and to have breakfast – although he still refuses to call it this in principle, preferring the term ‘morning lunch’ instead.

Ed before trainingEd four weeks into trainingEd after 16 weeks of training

Before After
Weight 104kg 98kg
Body Fat 29% 21%
Press Up 19 per minute 44 per minute
10m Sprint 2.5 sec 1.8 sec
50m Sprint 8.2 sec 7.3 sec
100 Sprint 14.5 sec 13.5 sec
Standing Jump 160 cm 220 cm

Ed’s cardiovascular fitness and his strength improved beyond all recognition. His wife assures me that he can also now get out of bed without making old man groaning noises. It was a delight to work with Ed and I hope his case demonstrates the many genuine benefits to personal training for sport or healthy living. I’m afraid I was however unable to influence Ed’s fashion sense.

I approached Dave Thomas for a summer of personal training primarily because of his rugby knowledge as I wanted to be in the best shape possible for the start of the new season. I wanted a PT who understood the game, and was experienced in the kind of training methods needed for my playing position. Dave did not disappoint. After a series of assessments, I embarked on a programme that targeted a number of related areas – strength, speed, power, flexibility, stamina, etc. The training was never dull, comprising gym work, track sprints, and plenty of circuits in Greenwich Park. The results have been fantastic, and fully justified the personal and financial commitment needed for a 16-week programme.

While the improvements are gradual, a look at the performance matrix and ‘before and after’ photos really highlight what can be achieved over an extended period of time. The other important aspect is education. Dave not only trains you, but also teaches you the theory and best practice behind his methods. I now have the required knowledge to train effectively by myself, and maintain the fitness levels I have achieved. Engaging a personal trainer is something I should have done a long time ago. I am already looking forward to working with Dave next summer to take me up to the next level.

Ed, Citi Rugby Captain
