The first big announcement is about the restructuring of our, and your, beloved business.  We are excited to announce that we have joined forces with Graeme Marsh, internationally renowned trainer and successful businessman, to found Foundry Studios Ltd.

This collaboration means our business portfolio now includes, The Foundry Personal Training Studios, The Training Shop, London Trainer NetworkDHG Corporate Outreach and our soon to be unveiled, unique bootcamp offering.  It also means Helen now has her own company credit card which could be dangerous.

Our new board of directors are:

Food For Thought

The secret of keeping grumbling bellies at bay

Last night I attended the latest London Trainer Network event with the ever charming guest speaker, James Lamper, health psychologist to the stars, the troubled and the every day person.

OK, as I’m not a personal trainer, it is a bit of a cheek to go to such events under false pretences… but what I learned about myself, my habits and how to break them was invaluable.

James predominantly discussed issues surrounding our relationship with food, and how trainers can tackle these issues with the co-operation of their clients.

Everyone uses food for different needs and so every relationship is different. However these are key things I learned which anyone can put into practice:

1. Visualise your goal. Where do you want to be? This creates an enormous sense of contentment and keeps you motivated in the face of adversity

2. Do you notice the difference between body hunger v emotional hunger?

  • Make a food diary including what time, where and what you ate. Note your thoughts, feelings and emotions. Can you see a pattern emerging?
  • What can you do to change any emotional behaviour around food?

3. Slow down your eating habits

  • Try putting down your knife and fork between each mouthful

4. If you are an emotional eater, before grabbing the chocolate bar, name the emotion you’re feeling and feel comfortable sitting with it and wait for it to pass. Deep diaphramatic breathing can really help you deal with this.

5. Stick to Pareto’s 80:20 principle. Be good 80% of the time, and enjoy yourself the other 20% of the time. Enjoy your treats, eat them slowly without guilt which will free you from dieting mentally.

At the end of the day, when we go to sleep, our bodies RESET and when we wake, we face a brand new day.

If you would like to understand more about your or your clients’ relationship with food and weight loss, James and Graeme Marsh will be hosting a seminar on Saturday 26nd February. Please see Weight Loss Results Seminar for more details or email graeme@foundryfit.com.

Another professional sportsperson joins The Foundry team

We are delighted to welcome Neil McMillan to the team at The Foundry.  As a premiership rugby player Neil adds an extra dimension to our training.  Renowned for his outstanding work-rate around the pitch and tackle count, Neil is also a qualified trainer and level two rugby coach.

He joined Ulster Rugby at the start of the 2001-02 season and signed for Harlequins RFC in 2008.  He has represented Ireland at Schools, U19, U21, Sevens and “A” level and at club level has competed in the Premiership, Magners League, (winning it in 2005) and Heineken Cup.

Neil is available for personal training, strength conditioning and technical sessions so if you want to take your fitness and skills to the next level and gain an insight into the life of a professional rugby player , he’s your man.  As he still plays top-level rugby, Neil’s availability is limited, and in demand, so advance booking is essential.

Neil ‘sick note’ McMillan is the member of The Foundry most likely to challenge ‘Hospital’ Dave Thomas to the top of the injury count table.

Be a trendsetter and improve your running technique!

We don’t normally report celebrity gossip but this comes to us courtesy of a Foundry client and vibram fan and we couldn’t resist.

The Mail reports here that in a moment of casual vs formal existential angst, Thomas Jane, star of HBO’s Hung (which is pretty good btw) wore his Vibrams to a recent premiere.

Vibrams have their fans and detractors (Dave witnessed a renowned strength coach whom he respects a lot perform a dubious ‘muscle test’ – we’re not fans of applied kinesiology here – to demonstrate their negative neurological effects) but we’re very firmly in the fan camp.

Many performance specialists, medical professionals and scientific studies have demonstrated the positive effects on health and performance with barefoot exercise; t’internet is littered with examples but see here for one such study which surprised the researchers.

We have also found observationally that many pain and movement markers have improved substantially when our clients, and even trainers, introduce and build up barefoot exercise slowly using Vibrams.

We therefore feel they are a great modern compromise between barefoot movement and avoiding that nice steaming present a dog kindly left you in the park or the broken glass remnants of a Friday night in town.

We like to remain objective at The Foundry which is why we have turned down affiliation with many branded products.  We became such fans of Vibrams ourselves however that we decided to stock them for our clients.  Since then they have flown from our shelves.

If you fancy discussing how Vibrams can help you drop us an email or pop into the The Foundry and join the A-list ! Ok maybe B-list but heh you just know Brad Pitt will be wearing them this Summer darling!

All purchases qualify for a FREE biomechanics/postural assessment with Keith Littlewood our movement specialist
